When preparing for emergency situations or long-term storage, it’s essential to choose canned meats with a long shelf life and high nutritional value. Here are some of the best options for canned meats to include in your emergency food supply:

Canned chicken

A versatile and lean protein source, canned chicken can be used in various recipes such as soups, salads, and casseroles. It generally has a shelf life of 3-5 years.

Canned tuna

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, canned tuna is a nutritious and popular choice for emergency food storage. It typically has a shelf life of 3-5 years.

Canned salmon

Canned salmon is another excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and protein. It can be used in similar ways to canned tuna and has a shelf life of 3-5 years.

Canned corned beef

With a high fat and protein content, canned corned beef can provide much-needed calories during emergencies. It can be used in sandwiches or cooked with vegetables and has a shelf life of up to 5 years.

Canned ham

Canned ham is a convenient source of protein that can be eaten as-is or added to various dishes. It generally has a shelf life of 2-5 years, depending on the brand and packaging.

Canned roast beef

Canned roast beef, which usually comes mixed with gravy, can be used in stews, sandwiches, or served with vegetables for a hearty meal. It typically has a shelf life of 2-5 years.

Canned Vienna sausages

These small, ready-to-eat sausages are a convenient source of protein and can be consumed straight from the can or added to various dishes. They have a shelf life of 2-3 years.  These are also popular with hikers because of their high calories to weight, and are easy to eat if you are travelling to a bug out location, especially on foot.

Canned SPAM

Yes, we have to mention SPAM.  This processed meat product is made of pork and ham and is an excellent source of protein and fat. It can be eaten cold or cooked and has a shelf life of 2-5 years.

Canned meat spreads

Meat spreads such as pâté or deviled ham are convenient and ready-to-eat sources of protein that can be eaten on crackers or bread. They generally have a shelf life of 2-5 years, but can vary wildly by type, so check expiry dates carefully before purchasing.

Canned sardines

Sardines are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and protein. They can be eaten straight from the can or used in various recipes and have a shelf life of 3-5 years.  Be aware that not many people enjoy canned sardines, so unless you or other family members enjoy them, unless you get them for super cheap, you might be better to put the money into other meat instead.

Remember to check the expiration dates on canned meats and rotate your stock using “First in, First Out” to ensure the longest possible shelf life. Store your canned goods in a cool, dry place to maximize their longevity.
